Evergreen Concert: Chicago West Community Music Center String Ensemble In-Person
Friends of the OBPL is proud to host an ensemble from the Chicago West Community Center (CWMC). This string and vocal ensemble will present a vibrant and inspiring program that honors the contributions of Black composers to the world of classical music.
The afternoon program will include several classical pieces that will explore the rich tapestry of musical works by celebrated pioneering composers like Florentine Price, Joseph Bologne Chevalier De Saint Georges and Scott Joplin, among others. Florentine Price was the first African American woman symphonist and the first whose music was performed by a major orchestra. Critics have hailed her as a unique voice in twentieth-century music. Joseph Bologne was a versatile composer with a number of well know pieces in a variety of orchestral styles. His many compositions earned him comparison with both Mozart and Haydn. Scott Joplin is also known as the “King of Ragtime” with his special brand of music, some of which was featured in the Academy Award winning movie “The Sting”. The CWMC ensemble will include violinists and cellists, a violist and vocalist, combining to provide lively, inspirational and celebratory music.
The program will include brief introductory narratives of origin and genre of the music being presented. Additionally a contemporary piece of music “Sweet Freedom Suite” by Howard Sandifer will be included. This event promises to offer a moving and memorable experience while paying tribute to the enduring legacy of Black composers to classical music.
A wine and cheese reception will follow the performance. The concert is free to patrons and friends. As the space is small, seating will be on a first come first seated basis. Friends of the OBPL look forward to seeing you at the concert.
